Mortgage wars: What you need to know about the current mortgage climate

What’s the story with lenders recently pushing the envelope on mortgage rates?

Today, the Globe and Mail’s real estate reporter, Tara Perkins provided an analysis of current lower mortgage rates in her article titled, “Mortgage battle escalates as Scotiabank offers 2.97% five-year rate.”

According to Perkins, the news of the day is that Bank of Nova Scotia is the latest lender to push the envelope on mortgage rates offering a five-year fixed rate of 2.97 per cent. This is the lowest five-year fixed rate among the big banks, and comes in slightly below the 2.99 per cent rate that Bank of Montreal has sparked controversy with in recent years.

David Stafford, Scotiabank’s managing director of real estate secured lending made a crucial point that Canadians need to keep at the forefront of their mind when shopping for mortgages. “Consumers view rate as a proxy for a cost. But the actual cost of the mortgage is the dollars that you spend in interest. There are three things that drive that: how much you borrow, at what rate, for how long. And the most expensive part of the mortgage right now is time, not the rate,” he notes.

This past Sunday children, parents and community members celebrated Easter in a big way while welcoming the Easter bunny and more at the ‘A Sp’egg’tacular Easter Event’ on the historic grounds of the Ireland House museum on Oakridge Farm.

Once again this year, as a presenting sponsor we were thrilled to be a part of this special community event, which raised funds needed for the Museum of Burlington’s educational programs and the preservation of the historic collection.

Admission was free to the Easter event and compliments of Rocca Sisters & Associates. This was our way of saying thank you to the community for all the support you have given us throughout the year and for making us #1 in Burlington for Sales Production and Volume for Royal LePage in 2013.

What were event goers most eager about? The egg hunt of course, which happened on an ongoing basis this year from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and saw kids of all ages running to collect plastic eggs which they then redeemed for free goodie bags.

Families enjoyed the many activities offered throughout the day including visits with the Easter bunny, children’s bazaar, Ireland House museum tours, games, egg dying and decorating demonstrations, historic cooking, vendors and exhibitors.

To celebrate spring, compliments of the Rocca Sisters & Associates, we gave out free flower pots to children and helped each child plant flowers in their pots.

The start of spring is finally here and that means one of the most anticipated outdoor events of the year is happening very soon.

We’re excited to partner once again with the Museums of Burlington, as presenting sponsor of A Sp’egg’tacular Easter Event, happening this Sunday, April 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ireland House at Oakridge Farm in Burlington.

This incredible event will feature a host of activities for children and adults alike. The big draw this year will be the Easter egg hunt which is open to children of all ages and running on an ongoing basis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Easter bunny will also be making a special appearance.

The fun doesn’t stop there. The day will also include festive crafts, carnival style games, face painting, Kicks for Kids inflatables and karate demonstrations. You will also be able to browse the silent auction, visit an assortment of vendors and the children’s bazaar.

A special feature at the event will be the opportunity to visit the Ireland House where you can explore your local heritage while learning about how past generations of families lived in Burlington.

The good news is, admission is free compliments of Rocca Sisters & Associates. This is our way of saying ‘thank you,’ to our community for making us the number one sales team in Burlington for a fourth consecutive year!

Donations are appreciated at the event, but not necessary. All proceeds raised will go to funding educational programs and the preservation of the historic collection at the Museums of Burlington.
